[vi′skäs·əd·ē ′grav·əd·ē ‚kän·stənt] (chemical engineering) An index of the chemical composition of crude oil; defined as the general relation between specific gravity and Saybolt Universal viscosity; the constant is low for paraffinic crude oils, high for naphthenic crude oils. Abbreviated VGC.
