Stokes, Doris

Stokes, Doris (d.1987)

(religion, spiritualism, and occult)

Doris Stokes was a British Spiritualist medium who became aware of her psychic gifts as a child, when she saw many deceased relatives. She had a special relationship with her father, who once told her, “All you’ve got to do is put out your hand and I’ll be there to take hold.” He was as good as his word and frequently came through to her after his passing, acting as her spirit guide.

Stokes came to prominence in 1978 when she undertook a series of tests on American television. She was a great success and did much to popularize mediumship. At the height of her popularity, she filled London’s Royal Albert Hall to capacity and also filled the Sydney Opera House in Australia three nights in a row. Stokes claimed to communicate with the deceased John Lennon. Despite illness, she continued to tour extensively. She authored a number of books, including Voices In My Ear (1980), More Voices In My Ear (1981), Innocent Voices In My Ear, and Whispering Voices. Stokes died in 1987 after an extended illness.
