Art Institute of the Lithuanian SSR
a higher educational institution of art in Vilnius, founded in 1951 after the unification of the Kaunas Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts and the Vilnius Art Institute. As of 1978, the institute had departments of representational and applied arts, comprising 16 subdepartments. Courses are offered in painting, graphic arts, sculpture, decorative and applied arts, interior decorating and planning, landscape gardening, restoration of architectural monuments, artistic design, design for textile manufacture and other branches of light industry, monumental decorative art, and art history. The institute has an evening division in Kaunas and a correspondence division in Vilnius for training teachers of drawing and drafting.
Prominent artists of the Lithuanian SSR closely associated with the institute include V. Gečas, V. Mackevičius, I. Mikënas, and V. Jurkūnas.
In the 1977–78 academic year the institute had approximately 600 students. The teaching staff numbered more than 100, including 18 professors and doctors of sciences and 39 docents and candidates of sciences. The institute has trained more than 1,700 specialists.
