Artinskii Layer
Artinskii Layer
(named after the Artinskii factory in the Middle Urals), a layer of the lower series of the Permian system, identified by A. P. Karpinskii in 1874. The deposits in the Artinskii layer are characterized by a complex of goniatites (Medlicottia orbignana Vern., Paragastrioceras suessi Karp., Parapronorites permicus Tschern., and others), Foraminifera (Pseudofusulina lutugini Schellw. and others), and Brachiopoda (Productus uralicus Tschern. and others). On the western slopes of the Southern Urals the deposits of the Artinskii layer are represented by sand and clay layers with seams of limestone and conglomerates. To the west of these begins a zone of limestone reef massifs that often contain industrial deposits of petroleum (Ishimbai and cities in the area of the Chusovaia River).
