Soviet-Argentine Agreements

Soviet-Argentine Agreements

Diplomatic relations were established between the USSR and Argentina on June 5, 1946. A trade and payments agreement was signed on Aug. 5, 1953, but was denounced by Argentina on May 17, 1962. The countries have concluded an agreement on the supply of equipment for the Argentine petroleum industry (Oct. 27, 1958), a supplementary protocol to the 1958 agreement providing for the delivery to Argentina of road-building machinery, lift and transportation equipment, machine tools, and other machinery (May 27,1960), and a trade agreement (June 25,1971).

A series of three agreements signed Feb. 13, 1974, provided for the supply of machinery and equipment to Argentina, scientific and technical cooperation, and expanded trade and economic, scientific, and technical cooperation. Other Soviet-Argentine agreements include a protocol providing for the creation of a joint commission on trade and economic, scientific, and technical cooperation (May 7, 1974) and an agreement on maritime navigation (Aug. 24, 1974). In a joint communiqué of May 8, 1974, both sides expressed support for the positive developments in international affairs and reaffirmed their desire for stronger ties, especially with respect to economic cooperation.
