Sovetskaia Gavan’

 

a city under krai jurisdiction and administrative center of Sovetskaia Gavan’ Raion, Khabarovsk Krai, RSFSR. Population, 31,000 (1975). A port on the gulf of Sovetskaia Gavan’ and the terminus of a railroad line beginning at the city of Komsomol’sk-na-Amure, Sovetskaia Gavan’ is divided into several separate parts situated along the coast. It has woodworking, fishing, ship-repair, and food-processing industries and an evening shipbuilding and ship-repair technicum. The port of Vanino is situated near the city.


Sovetskaia Gavan’

 

a gulf of the Sea of Japan, situated on the western coast of the Tatar Strait. The gulf measures approximately 2 km in width between the Putiatin Cape and the Menshikov Peninsula. It consists of three bays: the Severnaia, Zapadnaia (Konstantin), and Iugo-zapadnaia (Khadzhi Gulf). The city and seaport of Sovetskaia Gavan’ is situated on the shore of the gulf.
