In west-central OH, south of Lima; organized Feb 14, 1848 from Allen and Mercer counties. Name Origin: For the Auglaize River, which traverses it; from French 'at the stream' or 'at the lick,' with possible reference to a salt lick; or from an Indian word meaning 'fallen timbers.'
