[′pī‚än ′känd·ən‚sāt] (nuclear physics) A state of nuclear matter compressed to abnormally high densities, in which great numbers of pairs of particles, each consisting of a positive pion and a negative pion, are generated, and interact strongly with the nucleons, causing them to form a coherent spin-isospin structure.
