The icy wind sweeping the mineral-rich plateaus is also called puna.Puna(Albanian for “labor”). (1) The name of one of the first trade unions of Albanian construction workers. Puna was founded in September 1933 in the city of Korçë by a communist group and numbered about 500 members. It played a significant role in the preparation and execution of the “bread demonstration” in Konçë in February 1936. The union was banned by the government in the late 1930’s. (2) The name of a trade union of oil workers founded in Ku-çovë, Albania, in September 1935 and headed by communists. This union led the Kuçovë Strike of 1936.
