Pinnacles National Park,
c.26,000 acres (10,500 hectares), in the Gabilan Mts. of the Coast Ranges, W central Calif.; est. as a national monument 1980, designated a national park 2013. Pinnacles features a rolling landscape of broadleaf chapparal and rugged rock formations that include talus caves, formed from remains of an extinct volcano. North Chalone Peak, 3,304 ft (1,007 m), is the highest point in the park. With some 400 species of bees, the park has the greatest bee diversity on earth, there are also 14 bat species and 149 bird species, including the California condor.
