Location:West of Du Quoin and south of Steeleville on the Randolph-Jackson county line.
Activities:Hiking, sightseeing, bird watching. (Because Piney CreekRavine is a dedicated nature preserve, no hunting or consumptive use isallowed, and camping is expressly prohibited.)
Special Features:Piney Creek Ravine is a dedicated state nature preserve and is one ofonly two locations in the state where short-leaf pine grows naturally.The preserve also contains the largest collection of prehistoric rockart in Illinois, with almost 200 designs believed to date back to thelate Woodland (AD 500-1000) and Mississippian (AD 1000-1550) periods.Designs include both petroglyphs (carved) and pictographs (painted) ofhuman figures, deer, birds, snakes, and symbols.
