Pulunt’o Hai

(also Uliungur, Kyzylbash), a closed lake in China, in the northern part of the Dzungarian Plain. Pulunt’o Hai is located at an elevation of 468 m and has an area of 827 sq km. In the past it formed a single body of water with Lake Baga Nur, to which it is now joined by a channel. It is fed by the Urungu River. Its banks are desert-like with occasional solonchaks and growths of reeds. The water is slightly saline. The lake freezes in winter. It is rich in fish, especially dace, tench, crucian carp, Eurasian perch, gudgeon, and chebak.
