Blood banking A subspecialty of clinical pathology or internal medicine which is involved in Pt management through administration of blood cells and blood products including fresh-frozen plasma and cryoprecipitate; TM specialists are versant in relevant areas of hematology, immunology, infectious disease, both clinically and from a lab standpoint, participate in establishing standards for use of these products in a health care facility, and address the legal aspects of transfusions; in the US, the FDA and Am Assn of Blood Banks–AABB–set standards and provide guidelines in TM.
