Industries include coal mining at Montceau-les-Mines, metallurgy in Le Creusot and Gueugnon, and machine building (machine tools, electric locomotives, diesel engines for ships, and arms) in Le Creusot and Chalon-sur-Saône; there is also a silk industry in Chalon-sur-Saône. Agriculture is dominated by beef cattle raising, primarily on the Charollais upland, and the production of wine in the Maâonnais region; wheat and corn are grown and swine are raised.
