Verkhnii Ufalei

 

a city (since 1940) in Cheliabinsk Oblast, RSFSR. Located on the Ufalei River (in the Ufa basin). Railroad station on the Sverdlovsk-Cheliabinsk line. Population, 39,000 (1969). The first nickel plant in the USSR, which depended on locally mined ores, was built there in 1933. Cast-iron smelting is carried out in an old reconstructed plant (founded in 1761). Under construction in 1971 was a plant to manufacture equipment and spare parts for ferrous metallurgical enterprises. There is also an evening metallurgical technicum in Verkhnii Ufalei.
