Southern Ice Field
Southern Ice Field
(also Sørfonna), the southern part of the ice cap of North East Island in the Spitsbergen Archipelago, Norway. The ice field has an area of 2,350 sq km and reaches a maximum elevation of 721 m; the ice is up to 400 m thick. The Brosvell outlet glacier protrudes from the ice field 20–30 km into the Barents Sea. The Southern Ice Field is contiguous with the Eastern Ice Field in the north and northeast.
