Voennye Znaniia
(Military Sciences), a monthly magazine of USSR Civil Defense and the All-Union Voluntary Society for Assistance to the Army, Air Force, and Navy (DOSAAF SSSR).
Voennye znaniia is intended for a wide circle of Soviet readers and has been published since March 1925. Prior to 1948 it was entitled Dobrokhim (the magazine of the Dobrokhim Society; until October 1925), Khimiia i zhizn’ (Chemistry and Life; through July 1926), Aviatsiia i khimiia (Aviation and Chemistry; through December 1931), Khimiia i oborona (Chemistry and Defense; through December 1940), and Za oboronu (For Defense; through July 1948). The basic tasks of this journal are to explain Leninist positions on the defense of the socialist fatherland and the decisions of the CPSU and the Soviet government directed at strengthening the defensive power of the USSR, to propagate the revolutionary fighting and labor traditions of the Soviet people and its armed forces, and to disseminate knowledge about civil defense, military-technical matters, marksmanship, water and motorboat sports, the life and training of Soviet servicemen, the initial military training of youth, and the activity of the principal organizations, committees, and clubs of DOSAAF.
