From Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 © 1984 Mirage Studios, Inc. ART BY KEVIN EASTMAN AND PETER LAIRD. Shredder (pop culture)Brought to life in 1984 in the pages of Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's self-published blackand- white comic book Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the evil crimelord of New York City, Shredder (also variously called “the Shredder”) was the formidable foe of the four Turtle brothers and their sensei leader, the oversized rat Splinter. Shredder, voiced by James Avery, achieved pop-culture infamy in the original animated hit TV show Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987–1996). In most episodes he was portrayed in a menacing suit of spike-covered armor and a metal helmet and mask that covered most of his face, but under that gear was Oroku Saki, a supremely conditioned, middle-aged Japanese ninjitsu master. In the original animated TV series Shredder was often seen with his two incompetent henchmen, Bebop and Rocksteady. Shredder shared a deeply mired connection to the Turtles' main adversary, the mysterious and feared ninja clan known as the Foot (a pastiche of the Hand, from Frank Miller's Daredevil series). Shredder was a frequent guest in the spinoff Archie Comics comicbook series TMNT Adventures (1988–1995). Shredder also appeared in two of the three the live-action films; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie (1990), with actor James Saito in the role, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991), portrayed by Francois Chau. An edgier, grimmer Shredder (voiced by Scottie Ray) can be seen in 4Kids Entertainment and Mirage Studios' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series (2003–present), accompanied by his madscientist henchman, Baxter Stockman. In this new animated series, where the Foot Clan has become a powerful criminal empire in present-day New York City, the Shredder embodies three distinct personas: Oroku Saki, a successful and benevolent Japanese billionaire; the Shredder, the secretive, battle-armored leader of the Foot Clan; and, known to only a select few, the fire-red, cyborg-like Ch'rell, a feared criminal from planet Utrom, fighting a war against the Utroms while residing on Earth.shredder
