Viazniki

 

a city (since 1778) in Vladimir Oblast, RSFSR. Landing on the right bank of the Kliaz’ma River. Located 8 km from the railroad station along the highway from Moscow to Gorky. Population, 43,000 (1970; 17,000 in 1926).

An old center of the flax manufacturing industry, Viazniki has two linen mills, a flax combine, a textile machine-building plant, a garment factory, a cannery, and a meat and milk combine. A lighting fixture plant is under construction (1971); this plant will be a supplier to the automobile plant in the city of Tol’iatti. Viazniki has a flax technicum. The Blagoveshchenskaia Church, dating from 1683, is located in the city. There is also a museum of local lore with an art gallery.
