Sawhaj

 

(also Sohag), a city in Egypt; seat of the Sawhaj Governorate. Situated on a railroad line. Population, 74,900 (1966). A port on the Nile’s left bank, Sawhaj serves as a trading center for an agricultural region. Cotton ginning, food processing, and the manufacture of leather goods and footwear are the local industries.
