Advancing Volume

The trading volume of all advancing securities on an exchange or index on a given trading day. That is, advancing volume measures the cumulative volume of all securities on the exchange or index that had closing prices higher than their opening prices. Technical analysts use advancing volume and declining volume to determine buy and sell signals. Advancing volume should not be confused with up volume, which measures the same thing with respect to a single security.
