The seat of a marquesate in the Middle Ages, Savona was a flourishing commercial center until it was badly defeated and annexed by Genoa in 1528. The city has a 16th-century castle and a cathedral (16th–19th cent.).Savonaa city and port in northern Italy, on the Gulf of Genoa of the Ligurian Sea; capital of Savona Province, Liguria. Population, 79,600 (1971). The port of Savona had a freight turnover of approximately 12 million tons in 1972.
