Except; save.Usage Note: Traditionalists state that one should use the form a saving when referring to an amount of money that is saved. Indeed, that is the form English speakers outside of the United States normally use. In the United States the plural form a savings is widely used with a singular verb (as in A savings of $50 is most welcome). The widespread use of this construction has steadily eroded resistance to it. In our 2005 survey, only 37 percent of the Usage Panel found this sentence unacceptable. This was a considerable decrease from earlier surveys. In 1988, 57 percent rejected a savings, and in 1967, 89 percent rejected it.saving (ˈseɪvɪŋ) adj1. tending to save or preserve2. redeeming or compensating (esp in the phrase saving grace)3. thrifty or economical4. saving (sāv'ing), Rapid recovery of a complex motor skill after a long absence of practice.LegalSeeSavesaving
saving the proportion of a person's (personal saving), company's or institution's (retained profits) income that is not spent on current consumption. Savings are typically placed on deposit with a BANK, BUILDING SOCIETY, etc., or used to acquire financial and physical assets such as SHARES or plant. By forgoing immediate spending on consumption, savers seek to augment their future income through dividends, interest and rent receipts and through capital appreciation. In macroeconomic analysis, saving is the proportion of current NATIONAL INCOME that is not spent on current consumption and as such is a WITHDRAWAL from the CIRCULAR FLOW OF NATIONAL INCOME. In the simple circular flow model, all saving is undertaken by households; in the extended model, saving is also undertaken by businesses (retained profits) and the government (budget surplus). In real terms, saving is important in that it ‘finances’ physical INVESTMENT. Saving (forgoing current consumption) releases resources that can be devoted to increasing the country's CAPITAL STOCK and hence its capacity to produce a greater quantity of goods over time.
