Pukaskwa National Park

(pŭk`ăskwə), c.725 sq mi (1,890 sq km), central Ont., Canada, near Marathon; est. 1971. Stretching for c.50 mi (80 km) along the north shore of Lake Superior between the Pukaskwa and White rivers, the park has a rugged terrain with many lakes, rivers, and waterfalls. Tip Top Mt. (2,120 ft/650 m high), one of the highest points in Ontario, is in the park.

Size: 1,878 sq. km.
Established: 1978.
Location:On the north shore of Lake Superior, 25 km east of the town of Marathon in northern Ontario. The only road access to Pukaskwa is at the north end near Hattie Cove.
Facilities:Visitor center (é), Hattie Cove campground (67 sites, @di), backcountry campsites (along Coastal Hiking Trail), interpretive trails, boardwalk.
Activities:Camping, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, fishing, bicycling, interpretive programs, guided hikes (summer).
Special Features:Pukaskwa is Ontario's only wilderness national park, and its rugged landscape includes volcanic rock, boreal forest, and Lake Superior coastline. The Coastal Hiking Trail meanders for 60 km and offers opportunities to traverse the Canadian Shield.
