Situated on the Bay of Amatique of the Caribbean Sea, it is the country’s main port. It is the center of an area of banana plantations, which are owned by the American United Fruit Company. Oil is refined in the city, and bananas, coffee, fruits, valuable wood, and chicle are exported.
