Location:West-central Nevada, 60 miles east of Reno.
Facilities:Trails, auto tour route.
Activities:Hunting, hiking, wildlife observation.
Special Features:Listed as a "Globally Important Bird Area" by the American Bird Conservancy, the refuge's rich and diverse wetlands attract more than a quarter-million waterfowl annually. More than 280 species of birds have been sighted on refuge lands.
Habitats: 88,000 acres of desert, marsh, and shrub.
Access: Open from 1/2 hour before sunrise until sunset, daily.
Wild life: Long-billed dowitchers, black-necked stilts, American avocets, American white pelicans, double-crested cormorants, white-faced ibis, egrets, herons, gulls and terns. Also provides habitat for kit fox, lizards and kangaroo rats, White-tailed antelope squirrel, and rabbits.
