Sault Ste. Marie Canals

a waterway in North America, connecting Lake Superior with Lake Huron. The Sault Ste. Marie Canals bypass the rapids on the St. Marys River, which serves as the border between the USA and Canada. The waterway consists of three parallel channels. Two are in the USA; the northern one is 2.6 km long and 7.5 m deep, and the southern one is 2.5 km long and 5.5 m deep. The third channel is in Canada and is 2.2 km long and 6.7 m deep. About 100 million tons of cargo, mainly grain (wheat) and iron ore are shipped through the canals daily from the ports of Lake Superior. The US canal went into operation in 1855; it was reconstructed subsequently.
