Verhoogen, John

(1912– ) geophysicist; born in Brussels, Belgium. He obtained his Ph.D. in volcanology from Stanford University (1936), became a prospector and engineer in the Belgian Congo (Zaire) (1940–46), then joined the University of California: Berkeley (1947–77). He performed thermodynamic investigations of the earth's internal convection currents, then specialized in the paleomagnetism of iron-titanium oxides.
