SatyridaeSatyridaea family of butterflies. The wings have a spread reaching 10 cm and usually are broad and rounded; there are eyelike spots on the upper and lower sides. At the bases of the forewings there are one to three swollen veins. The caterpillars are naked or covered with short hairs; the posterior end of the body is bifurcate. The caterpillars develop mainly on wild grasses. The pupae of some genera hang head down; those of other genera lie on the ground. There are about 2,000 widely distributed species of Satyridae. In the USSR species of the genera Hipparchia and Melanargia inhabit the steppes, species of the genus Coenonympha inhabit forest meadows, and species of the genera Erebia and Oeneis inhabit meadows and the tundra.
