Bakony


Bakony

 

a mountain mass in Hungary north of Lake Balaton, in the Mid-Hungarian mountain system. Elevation, up to 704 m (Mount Körishegy).

The Bakony is 80 km long and is composed of Mesozoic limestones, dolomite, and isolated basalt outcrops. Karst is developed in places. Oak and beech forests alternate with pastures. Grapes are cultivated on slopes with southern exposure. There are deposits of soft coal, bauxite, and magnesium ores in the Bakony.
