Soviet actor and director. People’s Artist of the Estonian SSR (1964). Sats graduated from the Tartu Theatrical Studio in 1937. He worked in the Estonian Theater of Drama in Tallinn from 1937 to 1941 and in the Vanemuine Theater in Tartu from 1942 to 1944. In 1944 he worked as a stage director in the Ugala Theater in Viljandi. He returned there in 1948 as principal stage director and occupied that position until 1971. Sats still directs in the Ugala Theater. He has directed Sobko’s Behind the Second Front (1951), Särgava’s The Educator (1951), Priede’s Even Though It Is Autumn (1957) and Vika’s First Ball (1960), Heijermans’ The Good Hope (1959), Liives’ Mistress Mürgi (1967), Tammsaare’s Judith (1969), and Gilroy’s Who’ll Save the Plowboy? (1972). Sats was awarded the State Prize of the Estonian SSR in 1951. |
