Sour OrangeSour Orange(Citrus aurantium), a perennial evergreen fruit plant of the genus Citrus of the family Rutaceae. The tree reaches 10 m in height, and the branches and shoots have thorns measuring up to 6 cm long. The leaves are elliptic. The large, white flowers are solitary or in inflorescences and have a strong fragrance. The round, red-orange fruit is 5–6 cm in diameter; the pulp, which is tart, juicy, and orange, contains a large number of seeds. The sour orange is native to the Eastern Himalayas. It is widely cultivated in the Mediterranean countries and the Middle East. In the USSR the sour orange is raised on the Black Sea Coast of the Caucasus (from Gagra to Batumi) and in Azerbaijan. The fruits are inedible in fresh form but may be used in making juice. An essential oil (neroli oil) used by the perfume industry is extracted from the flowers. The sour orange is used as a stock for orange trees and other citrus crops. It requires the same care as all other citrus crops. In the USSR the fruits are harvested in October and November. sour orange
