source reduction

source reduction

Any practice intended to reduce the amount of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant that enters any waste stream, or is otherwise released into the environment, before recycling, treatment or disposal. Source reduction includes design, manufacture, purchase or use of materials to reduce the amount or toxicity of waste; because it is intended to reduce pollution and conserve resources, source reduction should not increase the net amount or toxicity of waste generated throughout the life of the product.
Techniques
Reusing items, minimising use of products that conatin hazardous compounds, using only what is needed, extending the life of a product, reducing unneeded packaging.
