Viability

Viability

(1) The ability of an individual (or a population) to live and produce offspring. The viability of a population is determined by fertility, duration of the reproductive period, and the number of individuals that attain sexual maturity.

(2) The ability of an individual to survive until a specific moment of his life cycle—that is, until the beginning of the reproductive period. A measure of the viability of a mutant is the relative frequency of survival to that period in mutants as compared with nonmutated individuals.
