Satavahana State

a state in ancient India existing from the first century B.C. to the third century A.D. and ruled by the Satavahana dynasty. The Satavahana state was founded by Si-muka, the ruler of northwestern Deccan. Simuka was of the An-dhra tribe of the Satavahanas and was a dependent of the Kanva dynasty, which ruled Magadha. Circa 30 B.C., Simuka became independent of the Kanva dynasty.

In the first and second centuries A.D., the rule of Simuka and his successors encompassed western and central Deccan and Malwa. The capitals of the Satavahana state were Nasik and, later, Pratishthana (now Paithan). The state disintegrated in the third century A.D. However, members of the dynasty continued to rule in various parts of Deccan in the third and fourth centuries and even later.
