Satana
Satana (pop culture)Both villainess and heroine, Satana Hellstrom is the daughter of a human woman and a demon called Marduk Kurios, who posed as the biblical Satan. She is the sister of Daimon Hellstrom, the occult-based Marvel Comics superhero best known as the Son of Satan. Created by writer Roy Thomas and artist John Romita, Sr., Satana made her debut in Marvel's black-and-white comics magazine Vampire Tales #2 (1973). Satana's father turned her into a succubus who requires the draining of male souls to survive. In order to access them, she usually kisses her victim as she draws forth his soul, causing his body to shrivel. The soul then takes the form of a butterfly- like being, which she promptly crushes with her fingers, thereby absorbing its psionic energy. After she feeds on this soul power, the spirit is cast down into her father's realm of hell. Satana's other powers include levitation and superhuman strength. She can cast magical spells and project bolts of “soulfire,” which do not physically burn but cause pain to a victim's life-force. Marduk Kurios also bonded Satana to an immensely powerful demon called the Basilisk. Satana could release the Basilisk from her body to do her bidding, but her control over it lessened each time she did so. When Satana refused to consume the soul of a former priest who had once saved her life, Marduk Kurios became her enemy and banished her from the hell dimension he ruled. Satana came to value her friendships with humans and became a leading foe of the N'garai, an ancient demonic race that sought to conquer humankind. When the soul of Earth's sorcerer supreme, Dr. Strange, was captured by demons, Satana went to his rescue. Satana saved Strange's soul, but a demon used a mystical weapon to mortally wound her. The Basilisk then turned on her, but it perished when she died in Marvel Team-Up vol. 1 #81 (1979). In Hellstorm #8 (1993), a series starring Satana's brother Daimon, a minister named Reverend Joshua Crow resurrected Satana, who consumed his soul. A villainess once more, she began preying on other men to gain enough power to take over hell, but this scheme came to nothing. In the Witches miniseries (2004), Dr. Strange brought Satana back to Earth to team up with the sorceress Jennifer Kale and the empath Topaz against a menace called the Hellphyr. Satana discovered that her father was behind the threat, and Marduk Kurios offered to let Satana rule his hell dimension alongside him. But Satana refused her father's offer and aided Kale and Topaz in destroying the Hellphyr. With her demonic heritage, however, a path of permanent benevolence for Satana is, at best, dubious. |
