Sasyk

(also Kunduk), a salt lake in Odessa Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Lake Sasyk has an area of 210 sq km, depths to 2.7 m, and widths of 3 to 12 km. It stretches from north to south for a distance of 29 km. The lake is separated almost completely from the sea by sandspits; only a narrow strait links it to the sea. The Sarata and Kogil’nik (Kunduk) rivers empty into Lake Sasyk, desalinizing it in the spring. The water level fluctuates by approximately 1 m. The lake freezes in December, and the ice breaks in March.

(also Sasyk-Sivash), a salt lake in Crimean Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Lake Sasyk covers an area of 75.3 sq km, but in the summer it decreases in size significantly. It has a length of 14 km, a maximum width of 9 km, and depths to 1.2 m. Lake Sasyk was formed from a lagoon of Kalamitskii Gulf of the Black Sea. It is separated from the gulf by a wide barrier beach. In the north and west it has long narrow coves. The surface of the lake is 0.6 m below sea level. Lake Sasyk is fed by seawater that filters through the barrier beach and by groundwater.
