Piazza Armerina

a town south of the city of Enna, in Sicily. There are several medieval buildings in Piazza Armerina, including a cathedral. Excavations were conducted from 1929 and were especially intensive in the 1930’s. Excavations 6 km from Piazza Armerina uncovered the remains of a lavish villa dating from the third or the fourth century A.D. Among the villa’s many rooms were formal rooms, with thermae and colonnades. Remarkable multicolored mosaics depict racing, hunting, and mythological scenes. Piazza Armerina reached its apex during the reigns of the emperors Maximian and Diocletian.
