Theodore Roosevelt National Park,
70,447 acres (28,531 hectares), W N.Dak., in the Badlands and on the Little Missouri River; est. 1947. There are three units—the North Unit, the Elkhorn Ranch Unit, and the South Unit. Roosevelt first came to the area in 1883 to hunt bison and other big game. In 1884 he established the Elkhorn Ranch, and for several years after that he returned to the ranch for short periods. The ranch house and other buildings have been accurately reproduced in a diorama. The landscape of the park is marked by tablelands, buttes, canyons, and rugged hills; animal life is diverse. Established: Established as Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park on April 25, 1947; redesignated on November 10, 1978. Wilderness designated on November 10, 1978.
Location:Park's North and South units are in both in western North Dakota. The South Unit entrance and visitor center are in Medora, just off I-94 (Exits 23 & 27), 135 miles west of Bismarck. The Painted Canyon Visitor Center is 7 miles east of Medora, just off I-94 (Exit 32). The North Unit entrance is 16 miles south of Watford City along US 85. The distance between Medora at the South Unit and the North Unit is 70 miles, via I-94 and US 85.
Facilities:Campgrounds, picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor centers (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities:Camping, hiking, horseback riding, boating, kayaking, fishing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, wildlife viewing, auto touring, interpretive programs.
Special Features:The park includes scenic badlands along the Little Missouri River and part of Theodore Roosevelt's Elkhorn Ranch. It also includes one of the largest petrified forests in the United Statesand extensive paleontological deposits from the Paleocene era. The 120-mile Maah Daah Hey Trail connects the two units of the park.
