[′sau̇nd ‚lev·əl] (acoustics) The sound pressure level (in decibels) at a point in a sound field, averaged over the audible frequency range and over a time interval, with a frequency weighting and the time interval as specified by the American National Standards Association.

sound level

The reading of a sound-level meter, using one of the three weighting networks; expressed in decibels (abbr. dB); the weighting network used must be specified; the most widely used network for noise measurements is the A-network.
