Physiological Journals
In Russia, the journal Physiologiste russe was published in Moscow from 1898 to 1912. In 1917,1. P. Pavlov founded the Russkii fiziologicheskii zhurnal im. I. M. Sechenova (I. M. Sechenov Russian Physiological Journal), since 1932 called the Fiziologicheskii zhurnal SSSR im. I. M. Sechenova (I. M. Sechenov Physiological Journal of the USSR). It publishes surveys of recent developments in physiology, news of interest to physiologists, and original articles on current problems of human and animal physiology. The Zhurnal vysshei nervnoi deiatel’nosti im. I. P. Pavlova (I. P. Pavlov Journal of Higher Nervous Activity, since 1951) publishes theoretical articles and articles presenting the results of recent research on the physiology and pathology of higher nervous activity in man and animals and on the physiology of the brain.
The Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR publishes Fiziolohichnyi zhurnal (Physiological Journal) in Ukrainian, containing articles on physiology, pathophysiology, and related disciplines; it places particular emphasis on the relationship between physiological research and clinical medicine. In recent years a number of specialized Soviet physiological journals have been founded, including Zhurnal evoliutsionnoi biokhimii i fiziologii (Journal of Evolutionary Biochemistry and Physiology, since 1965), Neirofiziologiia (Neurophysiology, since 1969), and Fiziologiia cheloveka (Human Physiology, since 1975). The journal Uspekhi fiziologicheskikh nauk (Advances in the Physiological Sciences, since 1970) publishes review articles and original theoretical articles on major problems of physiology.
The results of physiological research are also published in other Soviet biological and medical journals, including Tsitologiia (Cytology, since 1959), Biulleten’ eksperimental’noi biologii i meditsiny (Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, since 1936), Arkhiv anatomii, gistologii i embriologii (Archive of Anatomy, Histology, and Embryology, since 1916), Biofizika (Biophysics, since 1956), and Kosmicheskaia biologiia i meditsina (Space Biology and Space Medicine, since 1967; called Kosmicheskaia biologiia i aviakosmicheskaia meditsina [Space Biology, Aviation Medicine, and Space Medicine] since 1974).
Major foreign physiological journals include the American Journal of Physiology (Baltimore, Md.-Washington, D.C., since 1898), Journal of Physiology (London, since 1878), Journal de physiologie et de pathologie générale (Paris, since 1899; called Journal de physiologie since 1946), Archiv für Anatomie und Physiologie (Leipzig, since 1796), and Pflüger’s Archiv für die gesamte Physiologie des Menschen und der Tiere (Bonn, since 1868).
