Vagner’s Reaction
the oxidation of olefins by potassium permanganate in a weakly alkaline medium; results in the formation of glycols. It is used to investigate the structure of unsaturated organic compounds containing ethylene (unconjugated) bonds. The structures of several terpenes (pinene, limonene, terpineol, and terpin) were established by means of Vagner’s reaction. The reaction was discovered by E. E. Vagner in 1888.
