Sviiaga

 

a river in Ul’ianovsk Oblast and the Tatar ASSR; a right tributary of the Volga. The Sviiaga measures 375 km long and drains an area of 16,700 sq km. It originates on the eastern slope of the Volga Upland and flows north through a wide valley, parallel to the Volga. It empties into Sviiaga Bay of the Kuibyshev Reservoir. The river is fed primarily by snow. The mean flow rate 26 km from the mouth is 34 cu m per sec. The Sviiaga freezes in November or early December, and the ice breaks up in April or early May. The city of Ul’ianovsk is situated on the Sviiaga.
