Phthalylsulfathiazole

Phthalylsulfathiazole

(also Ftalazol), a sulfa drug. Owing to slow absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, phtalylsulfathiazole becomes concentrated in the large intestine, where it decomposes to release the active (sulfanilamide) part of the molecule. It is administered in powder or tablet form for the treatment of dysentery, colitis, and gastroenteritis and for the prevention of suppurative complications during intestinal surgery.
