Shoemaker-Levy 9 (shoo -may-ker lee -vee) A comet discovered in 1993 in a 2-year orbit round Jupiter by Caroline and Eugene Shoemaker and David Levy. It had broken into about 20 fragments, which crashed successively into Jupiter over a period of 6 days in July 1994.
