shock tube
shock tube n (General Physics) an apparatus in which a gas is heated to very high temperatures by means of a shock wave, usually for spectroscopic investigation of the natures and reactions of the resulting radicals and excited molecules shock tube
shock tube[′shäk ‚tüb] (fluid mechanics) A long tube divided into two parts by a diaphragm; the volume on one side of the diaphragm constitutes the compression chamber, the other side is the expansion chamber; a high pressure is developed by suitable means in the compression chamber, and the diaphragm ruptured; the shock wave produced in the expansion chamber can be used for the calibration of air blast gages, or the chamber can be instrumented for the study of the characteristics of the shock wave. |
