Remsen, Ira

(1846–1927) chemist, educator; born in New York City. German-educated, he founded the chemistry department at Johns Hopkins (1876–1913), where he trained a generation of eminent chemists. He was founding editor of the American Chemical Journal (1879–1914) and wrote several important textbooks. As Johns Hopkins' president (1901–13), he founded the school of engineering.
