Vshchizh
Vshchizh
an llth-13th century ancient Russian city on the right bank of the Desna River (now a village in Zhukovka Raion, Briansk Oblast). It is mentioned in the chronicle for the year 1142. In the mid-12th century it was an appanage city of Prince Sviatoslav Vladimirovich. Vshchizh was destroyed in 1238 by the Mongol Tatars. Excavations around the Vshchizh gorodishche (site of fortified town) during the 1940’s and the excavations led by B. A. Rybakov in 1940 and 1948—49 disclosed the remains of buildings and fortifications and outstanding examples of ancient Russian applied arts, such as a water dipper, bronze arches, and a gold ring.
