Tazhutdin

(also called Chanka from Batlaich). Born 1867; died 1909. Avar poet.

One of the founders of Avar literature, Tazhutdin was a mullah. His humanist poetry appealed for man’s spiritual liberation, affirmed the right of women to happiness, and attacked patriarchal religious canons. His love lyrics were marked by a lofty romanticism. Tazhutdin also wrote elegies and socially oriented poetry. He was influenced by the oral poetry of the Avar mountaineers as well as by Arabic classical literature.
