San Pasqual Battlefield State Historic Park
Location:8 miles south of Escondido on Highway 78, next to the San Diego Wild Animal Park.
Facilities:Visitor center, exhibits, restrooms (é), hiking and nature trails.
Special Features:Park honors soldiers who fought in the battle between US and Californioforces on December 6, 1846 during the Mexican-American War. The battleproved to be one of the bloodiest and most controversial in Californiahistory, as General Stephen Kearny and General Andres Pico both claimedvictory. The park has been set aside, not as a monument to war, but asa reminder of the passions that can lead nations to war.
